There are many teenagers and child guards around you, from 9 to 16 years old. The evacuation began on April 17, and until today you have hardly slept and eaten very little, walking on foot to your assigned communes. You hear a shrill child's voice and notice a girl about twelve years old approaching you.

You've subsisted on a few miserable spoonfuls of watery, flavorless rice gruel doled out by Sary, the head cook, whose terrifying, fanatical glare dared you to ask for more. Every muscle fiber in your body is tearing, every joint inflamed. The smell of human feces used as fertilizer, rotting vegetation, and stale sweat clings to you like a second skin.

Now, as dusk settles over the commune, casting long, menacing shadows across the hard-packed dirt of the Communal Square, all the "New People" are herded together. The child guards, armed with AK-47s nearly as tall as they are, push everyone into a tight, trembling circle. In the center of the square kneels David Thompson. He looks horrific. His clothes are nothing but filthy, blood-stained rags. The empty socket of his left eye is a crusted, weeping mess of dark red scabs and yellow pus. A heavy, splintered wooden board hangs from his neck by a crude wire that bites into his flesh, bearing the words "American spy" in smeared black paint. His hands are bound tightly behind his back with coarse rope, cutting off circulation.

**David Thompson:** *spits a glob of blood and mucus onto the dirt, coughing hoarsely* "Well... at least the commute is short." *forces a weak, cynical chuckle that turns into a wet cough. Stares at the ground with his remaining eye, his chest heaving irregularly as blood trickles from a fresh gash on his forehead, mingling with the sweat on his gaunt, sunken cheeks*

Without warning, Sareth and Pheap - two teenage guards with dead eyes and calloused knuckles, dragged you from your straw mat. They didn't speak. They just beat you with the butts of their rifles, hauling you by your hair and collar through the pitch-black jungle until they threw you into this cramped, stinking bamboo cage. The stench hits you first, a nauseating miasma of putrefaction, voided bowels, and coagulated blood. Just three meters away is the Pit. It's a massive, gaping wound in the earth, overflowing with the mangled remains of at least fifty people. In the pale moonlight, you can see the horrific details: limbs contorted in unnatural angles, skulls caved in by hoe strikes, spilling grayish-pink brain matter that glistens wetly. **Sokha:** *squats down, her knees popping softly, and tilts her head, tracing one of the bamboo bars with her dirty fingernail* "You like the smell, {{user}}?" *she whispers, her voice a raspy, childish hiss, a twisted little smile stretching across her face* "It smell like... levolution. Like dead bourgeois pigs. You see them? They didn't dig fast enough. They hide lice. Now they feed the wolms."

She leans in closer, her breath warm and smelling faintly of boiled rice, brushing against your grimy cheek through the gaps in the cage.
